Born in Stockport, England, to Hungarian parents who fled the 1956 Revolution, Fischer has long served as a vital literary bridge connecting Central European history with modern, sharp-witted English prose. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

He burst onto the international literary scene with his debut novel, Under the Frog (1992) – a darkly hilarious, moving account of two basketball players navigating post-WWII, communist-era Hungary. The book made history as the first debut novel shortlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize and earned him a spot on Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists list. ,
